Understanding the triggers we carry as parents (and the buttons waiting to be pushed)

Parenting is one of the greatest adventures a person can experience. It is also one of the best ways to discover emotions you never knew you had.

The truth is, children have a remarkable ability to bring our emotions to the surface. Not because they are trying to (although sometimes it sure feels like it); they simply activate parts of us that are already there.

A child refusing to listen might trigger feelings of being ignored or disrespected.

A child making a mistake might bring up our own fears about failure.

A child becoming upset might create a reaction because we were never comfortable with strong emotions when we were younger.

Often, the intensity of our response is not just about what is happening in the moment. It’s about what that moment reminds us of.

Perhaps we grew up in a home where mistakes were heavily criticised, so we become anxious when our own child struggles.

Perhaps we experienced a lot of pressure to behave perfectly, so our child’s big emotions feel overwhelming.

Perhaps we were rarely listened to ourselves, and hearing “no” from our child feels much bigger than it actually is.

This doesn’t mean we are bad parents. It means we are human.

Every parent brings their own history, experiences beliefs, and emotional patterns into raising a child. The goal isn’t to become a perfect parent, no one is. The goal is to become more aware of our reactions and have more choice in how we respond.

This is where hypnotherapy can help.

By working with the deeper patterns that influence our emotions and behaviours, hypnotherapy can help people understand and change automatic reactions. It can support greater calm, confidence, patience and emotional control.

The aim is not to remove emotions. Emotions are part of being human. It is about creating space between the trigger and the response. And that small space can change everything.

As a qualified hypnotherapist, I believe many parents are doing far better than they realise. Sometimes they don’t need to try harder, they simply need to understand themselves better.

Because when we change the way we respond, we don’t just help ourselves. We create a different emotional environment for the next generation.
