Rapid Anxiety Reduction Method (RARM)
From worry ahead to calm within
The RARM technique is a relatively new evidence-based methodology developed by one of Australia’s leading hypnotherapists to ease building anxiety about an upcoming event. It’s fast, simple and tailored to the specific situation.
Through a combination of relaxation and guided imagery, RARM has shown impressive results in reducing and removing anxiety both before and during a previously dreaded event.
It is usually undertaken in the days before the upcoming event, helping to prepare the mind for the situation ahead and support a calmer, more settled state.
RARM can help with anxiety around situations such as:
Public speaking
Taking a test
Medical and dental procedures
Flying
Driving
Job interviews
Difficult conversations or negotiations.
FAQs
What more can you tell me about RARM?
The Rapid Anxiety Reduction Method (RARM) is a guided imagery technique that I typically use as part of a broader hypnotherapy session to help reduce the intensity of anxiety responses.
RARM works by helping you safely imagine and revisit a situation that triggers anxiety, while using guided therapeutic techniques to create a different emotional experience around it. The aim is to reduce the emotional “charge” attached to the situation, so the brain and nervous system no longer respond with the same level of fear or distress.
Guided imagery is widely used within psychology and hypnotherapy because our minds respond strongly to imagined experiences. When we vividly imagine a situation, many of the same emotional and physical systems involved in real-life experiences can become activated. By creating a new, calmer experience in the imagination, we can help develop a different response to situations that previously felt overwhelming.
RARM may be useful for specific anxiety triggers, such as:
Fear of flying
Anxiety before exams or assessments
Fear of needles or medical procedures
Dental anxiety
Public speaking or presentations
Driving-related anxiety
Other situations where you know what triggers your anxious response
The goal of RARM is not to pretend anxiety does not exist. Anxiety is a normal and useful human response. Instead, the aim is to help your brain recognise when the alarm response is no longer needed at the same intensity, giving you greater calm, confidence, and choice in how you respond.
What does research say about RARM?
The Rapid Anxiety Reduction Method (RARM) is a newer therapeutic approach used in hypnosis with broad research into the method is still developing.
A pilot study published in the Australian Counselling Research Journal in 2023 explored the use of RARM with clients experiencing anxiety. The study reported encouraging results, with participants showing reductions in anxiety intensity measured through subjective distress ratings.
RARM draws upon principles that are well recognised within psychology and neuroscience, including emotional processing, nervous system regulation, attention, memory and changing the way the brain responds to perceived threats.
Related research into rapid, body-based and memory-focused approaches suggests that helping people experience safety while engaging with anxious responses can support meaningful change.
How does a RARM session work?
Each session begins with a conversation to clarify your area of focus and desired outcome. You’ll then be guided into a relaxed, comfortable state, where we work with your deeper mind using gentle suggestions, imagery and therapeutic techniques. If I feel the Rapid Anxiety Reduction Method (RARM) will be on benefit in resolving your issues or concerns, I'll suggest using this approach as part of a broader hypnoss session. You’ll feel calm, safe and in control at all times.
How many sessions will I need and what's the cost?
Everyone’s journey is unique. Some clients experience the shift they want after their first session while others prefer a few more to build lasting change. You’ll always know what to expect and be able to make informed decisions. I offer competitive, transparent pricing and will be happy to discuss this with you during your initial enquiry.
Do you offer in-person or online sessions?
I offer both in-person and online hypnotherapy sessions, providing flexibility and choice to suit your individual needs.
In-person sessions offer the opportunity to meet in a calm, supportive environment where you can fully disconnect from daily distractions and experience a personalised therapeutic space. Being physically present can help some clients feel more connected, comfortable, and supported throughout their journey.
Online sessions provide the convenience of accessing hypnotherapy from the comfort and privacy of your own space. They are a flexible option for those with busy schedules, limited availability or who prefer the ease of receiving support without the need to travel. With a quiet and comfortable environment, online sessions can offer the same personalised guidance and therapeutic experience as meeting in person.
Whether you choose to attend in person or online, my approach remains the same: creating a safe, supportive and empowering space to help you work towards meaningful and lasting change
