Using humour to calm the mind: what Stranger Things reminded me about hypnosis

Letting my teenage children watch Stranger Things for the first time was exciting for them… and a little nerve-wracking for me. The suspense, the monsters the dark twists, all of it can linger in young minds long after the credits roll.

To help them unwind and reset, we followed each episode with a light-hearted comedy. Laughing together erased the scary images, replacing tension with joy and calm before bedtime. It’s amazing to see the power of the brain at work: experiences can be reframed quickly, shifting fear into relaxation through a simple, guided process.

This made me think about hypnosis. Just like the comedy helped my children “overwrite” scary moments, hypnosis works by accessing the subconscious mind and helping clients release negative patterns or memories. Through hypnosis, the brain can be guided to reinterpret experiences, calm stress and create new, positive associations, much like replacing a scary scene with laughter.

It’s a reminder that the mind is flexible, resilient and capable of transformation. Whether through humour, hypnotherapy or guided visualisation, we can harness the power of the brain to heal and reframe experiences, moving from fear to calm, through intention and guidance.
